Early Sound-Recording and Sound-Reproducing Apparatus Functioning as Electronic Music Instruments

This study presents the emergence of the idea of using sound-recording and sound-reproducing devices as a musical instrument. Among the early devices surveyed, alongside the better-known attempts at recording short excerpts of sound or separate tones, the later emergence of an abstract “painted sound” takes place.
