MUSICAL AND RESEARCH ART
Yana Yazova – Musical and Cultural Parallels. A Hypothesis of Drama as a Musical Creation Inventio. Arnold Schering, Beethoven und Die Dichtung
Yana Yazova’s work brings us back to the cultural environment integrity problem, the interaction between the arts, the critical thought, i.e. the components of placing Bulgaria into European culture, from the Antiquity to Nietzsche’s time – without missing any stages, without ignorance and darkness (“in which theft and murder take place”), without forbidden books and burnt manuscripts. Reality has turned Yana Yazova into an example of cultural hermitage that is rare among Bulgarians, one that reminds of Nietzsche’s own.
For a period of more than fifty years, Prof. Kaufman has been collecting Jewish musical folklore – songs heard and written down in cities and synagogues, religious and secular, by known and unknown authors. A large volume of these songs exist unaltered, but also a large volume had been arranged by Prof. Kaufman – it is to be published soon. He has researched them as well (there is an article on the subject written by him, in the Bulgarian musicology press), but in his research he does not mention his arrangements.
Hidden polyphony is used in works composed for monophonic instruments with limited polyphonic possibilities (bowed string instruments) as well as for polyphonic instruments (guitar, lute, harp, harpsichord, piano, organ, celesta, xylophone, marimba, glockenspiel, vibraphone) and even for small ensembles, when texture exceeds instruments’ technical possibilities required for “real” polyphony.
In the last few decades, cognitive science and music psychology begin to investigate the neurobiological processes related to music awareness. As a result, modern musical theory associates with new music perception and memory interpretations – using latest technologies and tools. Music theory affects music dictation types, under the influence of new knowledge and technology.
